EATING IN PUBLIC - HI-5 Recycling Bins

EIP was invited to do a workshop at Kapolei Farmers Market. Besides the folks on the blog title, we were joined by folks from Kanu Hawaii, Kokua, and City and County's Department of Environmental Services, and quite a number of students of Kapolei HS.

We succeeded in making about 30 bins and distributing about 25. Hopefully this will change the look of our bin map, which sadly includes no dots in the Kapolei area.

Our show at the Hawaii State Art Museum ran for a year and ended this week. There were exactly 100 bins in the exhibition that were immediately distributed to a team of new and ongoing bin-ners. They will be checking in as they put up their bins. One of them is the Director of Environmental Services for City and County, who is going to use test the HI-5 for city adoption. (unbelievable!)

A few were put up around the museum.

PLASTIC FREE KAILUA took HI-5 bins to show what Eating in Public bins are like in action at two events on May 14. In the morning the bins were at the Kailua Beach Clean Up, and later in the day, at Lanikai Elementary School's "Under the Stars" Concert. Luckily the bins were at the concert because the event organizers sold only plastic/aluminum drinks but had NO recycle bins available for their 400+ attendees!!

Hawaii Kai Little League Baseball Tournament - Opening Day

A few months ago Laurie Downing saw one of the HI-5 bins at Koko Head Park. I think this bin was placed there by Tere Castro. Anyway Laurie got the idea to have a bunch of bins ready for the Little League Baseball Competition this year, and for them to stay up permanently. Since Parks+Rec tends to remove our bins, she worked concertedly with them for official approval. They were fairly supportive except they wanted all wire edges protected.

Asking permission is not typical for Eating in Public (we never ask because we don't believe anyone has the authority to grant or deny us) but CHEERS for Laurie. In her own words,

"Opening day went very well. We made an announcement to the whole Hawaii Kai Baseball community about the bins and to please kokua. The bins were VERY well received. Folks were excited. And the bins were being well used. BTW, we went back to duct tape to cover the rough edges. They ended up working better than the clips. Attached are some pics. Carlise (Peter) was there to throw out the first pitch. Hope to work w/ you again and that we are given the opportunity to expand the program after 6 months. Thanks so much for your support. People were blown away w/ the fact that your organization donated all the materials for the bins."

Laurie and Kainoa making bins for Koko Head Park in Hawaii Kai to be ready for next weekend's baseball league competition. Laurie even asked Parks and Recreation for permission and they agreed (what!?! a miracle!!!) if all sharp edges are protected. Lori came up with a brilliant method of using plastic fluted screw anchors around sharp ends. Worked swell if expensive. But now that we know how we can probably substitute the anchors for cut up plastic tubing.

Drama at Hawaii People's Fund Annual Dinner

EIP, as a Hawaii People's Fund grantee, was invited to show our wares and join in at their Annual Dinner this past Saturday. A table display was readied for the pre-dinner showed and tell. During the dinner I also collected beverage empties as attendees finished them - done both as a performance of uncanny labor as well as a way to pragmatically channeling the remains of the $5/$6 beers to the needy just outside the building.

Toward the end of the night, one of the caterer's bartenders made me to stop collecting bottles. I told her the collecting is a part of a HPF supported project. She said it doesn't matter because the bottles belong to her boss. I said I thought that when we purchase a beer for $5/6 we got the bottle with it. She said, "No, just the liquid inside." That they recycle and the money redeemed belongs to her boss. They even took all the ones I collected back.

The redemption price of all the bottles I collected couldn't have been more than $5. Even me alone tipped them more than that last night.

There you have it. The middle man once again shows her face. Ever ready to defend the big man.
